![]() ![]() Plugins and other things can run on other threads, but the rule of thumb is that more threads/cores ≠ better performance. I haven’t found a great way to test this, but from what I’ve read and seen is that the core engine relies upon one thread for all of the tick based updates. ![]() Search for anything Minecraft performance related and you’ll see tons of threads saying MC is single threaded… There’s some other stuff out there saying the server jar has been multi-threaded since 1.14, and that some of the other performant based server jars like PaperMC, Airplane, and Purpur are also optimized for multithreaded performance. Newer CPUs with higher clocks (GHZ) will perform better.CPU Generation (age) & Clock Speed Matters Most.More cores does not mean better performance.Minecraft is pretty much single threaded- your single threaded performance makes a difference. The faster your server can read and write chunks to storage the better, a spinning hard disk is no match for a modern SSD.The below bullets are some good overall things to keep in mind hosting a server: There are some must haves for good server performance. Let’s be honest- you can run a vanilla Minecraft server on some really low end hardware- however we’re looking for some good performance for you and your friends and we don’t want to have lag and TPS drops. Hosting your own server can also be more cost effective than renting a server.Ĭhoosing hardware for your Minecraft Server Why do I need a dedicated Minecraft server? You need a server because it’s persistent, it’s always online, you can connect to it from pretty much anywhere in the world when travelling and your friends can join and play when you’re not online. ![]() These are my views based on my experience hosting a smaller server with 10-15 players. This isn’t a guide to building an enterprise server.I’m going to kick this off with a few disclaimers. ![]()
